LILIKOI (Passiflora edulis, P. edulis f. flavicarpa)

Lilikoi fruit, also called passion fruit, is commonly used to induce relaxation, relieve insomnia, menstrual and spasmodic disorders. Lilikoi is also used topically for skin disorders, inflammation, hemorrhoids, and burns; having an anti-inflammatory and pain relieving effects.
The fruit of Passiflora edulis has been used internally by the Brazilian tribes as a heart tonic and passion fruit is still used today in South American traditional medicine. In Peruvian traditional medicine today, passion fruit juice is used for urinary infections and as a mild diuretic. Researchers have documented the properties of passion fruit juice in at least 4 studies.

Lilikoi is used in the treatment of insomnia, nervous tension, irritability, neuralgia, irritable bowel syndrome, premenstrual tension and vaginal discharges. An infusion of the plant depresses the motor nerves of the spinal cord, making it very valuable in the treatment of back pain. The infusion is also a sedative, slightly reduces blood pressure and increases respiratory rate.

The herb contains alkaloids and flavonoids that are an effective non-addictive sedative that does not cause drowsiness. It is of great value in epilepsy.
